You can't block the comments, but you can delete them by clicking on the trash below the comment.
Deeper lines of defense have you going to the blog design pages, adding word verification and comment moderation so that like some blogs you go to no comment shows up without your permission.
At least I don't know of any way other than these. Maybe someone will have a better answer. Word verification has stopped almost all computer generated spam for me. An unwanted guest requires that you review all comments before they can be posted. An unwanted guest will quit fairly quickly perhaps when he or she sees they are blocked by you, but if it is so bad that it actually bothers you, then I don't know what to do.
Some of Liz's absences from blogging have been about that. I am sure she would have just blocked the unwanted messages if she could have.
You actually can't block followers, just their comments. I use the Akismet plugin to eliminate spam on my Wordpress blog (it's very accurate), and have the first post by every user set to Moderated.
I'm on a different platform so I can't offer you any help. But I am curious, as to the "no apparent reason" part of your question.
For instance I'm not a follower on Blogger, but I do follow through Google Reader. I don't comment but read your posts (which although that might show up on a stat counter) may appear to be "no apparent reason". My reason is to read your blog.
